The Department provides information on the institution of marriage and the legal requirements involved. It is important to understand what steps to take in the lead up to getting married. Marriage is regulated by the Marriage Act 1961. The Department also administers the Marriage Celebrants Program through the Marriage Celebrants Section of the Civil Justice Division. Marriage Celebrants are also regulated by the Marriage Act 1961.

This visa allows you to enter Australia and marry your intended spouse (fiancé(e)) within the visa's nine (9) month validity period. Your fiance(e) must be one of the following:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
- an eligible New Zealand citizen.
